Almost in every interviewing skills and personality development programs tell us about the importance of eye contact in interview. It is been said to maintain eye contact with the interviewer just after entering the interview room and to keep it till one sits down. But don’t you think it could create problems for both the interviewer and the interviewee as it is not a natural process whenever you are meeting with someone for the first time.
It is obvious to look one over with few seconds when meets with someone new. Both male and female interviewer go through an evaluation process like the hair style, dress code, body structure, and over all presentation of the interviewee. Even female interviewer is more critical than male interviewer regarding over all presentation and appearance of interviewees. Even they would go to the interviewee’s hair length, even the cloth materials and shoes.
It is not a natural process if an interviewee just after entering interview room starts maintain eye contact, this make the interviewers uncomfortable and its result is to distract the interviewer during interview process which become disadvantage to the candidate. It also makes the candidate feel very uncomfortable, especially for female candidate when they find the male interviewer looking at them in time to time interval. Even some time making eye contact can create nervousness if the opposite person holding a high impact personality. And by this impact you may answer some wrong way or starts mumbling somewhere.
Therefore in a job interview it is advisable to allow few seconds from both ends after entering the room and allow the interviewer to look over for few seconds and then keep eye contact. This few seconds can be utilised by looking down to open folder or briefcase, moving chair to near table, arrange papers etc. If you are facing a board interview where interviewer is more than one there it is advisable while briefing your move your head and make eye contact with every interviewer. It is been seen that if this is allowed then the interviewer and interviewee both develops positive feelings and usually have a better outcome.
So from today onwards whenever you are looking to have a good communication in interview keep concentrate on eye contact which should not look like staring at the interviewer.
