Parents often worry how their children are learning and could they be able to meet the education standards. Parents and teachers have big dreams that their children and students should become successful in their life. And to do so one thing is very much important that is your mind, your mind matters a lot. When we talk about mind it is more important to have a good memory. Because memory has something which needs to be strong to grasp the things easily for any person starting from child to students to adult.
Memory has three stages which include sensory information (like what you see and here) short term memory (like active or working memory) and long term memory (like permanent memory).
Learning is the outcome of memory and it depends on how well you have processed the information. Recalling information is specially needed for students. They need to be passed the information from short term memory to long term memory to retain information during examination, test or whenever required.
Here are some tips for learning that will enhance a student’s ability to recall information and achieve excellent results:
Know how much is too much: At first there is a need to understand the span of attention of any students and their capacity to store information in their working memory. It is obviously varies from different mentality students. Those are not educationally sound for them it could be hard to store huge information in memory for the long time, which will leave them clueless and confused. If we provide them limited information for study and help them to learn with energy will help them to retain information for the longer time.
Read aloud, write and recollect: In our childhood days our parents insist us to read loudly, we thought on that time they just want to listen what will we are reading. But it is true which is read out loudly will enhance your retention than just reading it. Whenever you are reading, write down the important facts or points that you will help you to retention and will be useful while studying for exams.Recollecting is the ability to retain the information after reading and writing. If you have set the information efficiently then you will be able to retrieve the information.
Add emotion: If you learn anything with the element of emotion that will be easily retained in your memory. Visualise some picture or draw some elements on paper to retain the fact in mind. Especially in English, Science, History, Geography is such subject you can use this tactics. Like if your lesson is galaxy, students can see the pictures of the stars and galaxy. That will surely help them to recall the content what they have learn.
Give meaning: If there is a subject which has many names, dates and figures, then it is always better to relate this fact with something or some names. Like if you wish to remember a spelling ASSASSINATION you can use this small tricks remembering by like this (One “ASS” upon another “ASS”, Then “I” mean “me” sat on that, then my country “NATION” sat on me) which means ASS+ASS+I+ NATION. This could help you to recall the spelling easily. Suppose you want to remember a name called SATARUPA remember this as “100” which means “SATA” rest will be recall by you automatically. Remember any chunking numbers, colours or aspects in groups helps in remembering and learning the concepts faster.
Make connections: It is vital to make connections or associations between the new information and the previously learnt information. The higher number of associations made the more chances of retaining that information easily and this in turn induces your memory power through which you can retrace the information easily.
Rehearse well: It is said “Practice makes a man perfect”, therefore rehearsing information can make you master in any concept and with is very much important. For kids rehearsing on same topics make them understand and recall the things properly. Hence for students practice over time and ace your exams without planning to finish your study in one night.
Avoid distractions: Avoiding distraction is very much important for study. Choose a quiet and peaceful environment, comfortable seating and table, bright light, proper ventilation and avoid distraction around you. Distracting elements are as video games, T.V, music player, phones etc. I some time come across some students who has a tendency to do maths in front of seating T.V, which I find a very much problematic as it effects concentration level. While studying, if distraction persists then encoding the information suffers leading to forgetting. Hence, for encoding to be efficient you shouldn’t give ways to distraction instead concentrate and give maximum attention to avoid the inability to retrieve information.
Take a break between learning: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” yes if you continuously studying without any break and physical exercise then it will be troublesome for you, so take breaks after few hours of study and relax your mind. Not only that doing some physical exercise and sound sleep strengthens your ability to retain the information. Sleep is very crucial to boost your memory. However, for most of the problems including imbalance of mind and body, stress, preparing for exams the best prescription commonly given is get some sleep.
Share with others to help you revise better: Sharing knowledge always help to increase our knowledge. So whatever you learn make a group of friends and discussed that topics on that groups, if you shares that way then you can get some
information which can not only help you to increase your knowledge also you can add some new things in your prepared answer sheets. This is the reason why teachers have mastered the concepts they teach because they have to teach the same lessons and concepts to many batches in school. Adding to this, if the concepts are thought using real life stories and examples or experiments, then the students are likely to remember them for life because anything visual stimulates our attention and learning takes place faster.
Asking questions: Asking questions like why, how, what helps in learning concepts well because here reasoning, thinking and analysis are involved. Anything which triggers our mental processors helps in learning the concepts faster and better. Finding answers to these questions makes memory work out as all the mental processors are involved making the memory charged and active. Asking question is by taking the quizzes or tests which will help in reasoning and in a way enhances your memory power. After this session feedback will represents what is wrong and what is right.
These 10 ways can help students learn efficiently and remember information so that they can be retrieved whenever in need. If these procedures are followed anyone can learn anything quickly and retrace the information efficiently. However, all these procedures have to be followed in a systematic way and one shouldn’t end up multi-tasking. The reason is because our brain processes and stores the information systematically.
This guideline of above methods will help students to have a great impact on the way they can retrieve information whenever asked for. Retaining is totally depending upon how you are learning and using this process. Ultimately do not forget that remembering is a skill that takes lot of practice and learning is a lifelong process. So prepare your mind to learn and follow above steps for retaining information for future success.
